Still Job Hunting? Age Discrimination may be why
While the Obama government celebrates it’s signed a healthcare reform bill, the unemployed are still looking for a job. I got this email today about it taking 11 months for this man to find a job…He wrote to say:
Thanks, Robin:
I used your methods from “60 seconds and you’re hired” – and the new “Over 40 and you’re hired” I got hired – after 11 months in cold water - - and I also got my hair done to make the gray go away! There is much ageism out there!
I agree that age discrimination is rampant right now. Recent US Labor Dept reports have shown that the people age 45 and older are stilling after 8 months of job hunting. Employers’ actions reflect their attitude: high layoffs of older employees and more hiring of younger workers.
Since tomorrow is my birthday and I’ll forever leave my 40s behind….I HATE to think of myself as OLD – even if my body has more aches, pains and pounds than I’d care to admit. I simply refuse to LOOK, ACT or BE OLD!
Physical age is nowhere near as important as your attitude is in having an enthusiastic approach to living life and pursuing your career to be everything you want it to be. I look ahead and know I have so many more people I plan to help. Having an important purpose keeps us young.
My key advice to my over-40 job search clients is DON’T LOOK OLD! Your image, resume, cover letter, conversations, and interviews need to show you are vibrant, sharp with a lot to offer.
Robin Ryan’s Job Search Action Tip:
To offer employer’s the best impression of YOU, stay young. That means…..
- Educate yourself on industry news, trends, and being up-to-date on what competitor’s in your industry are doing. And be sure to attend a couple conferences or industry meetings.
- Master a new skill over the next 6 months.
- Improve your computer skills – learn how to use a new software program, or enhance your ability using one you already have some knowledge applying.
- Be happy. Attitude really is a choice. Watch funny shows. Hang around with kids, and spend time with anyone who is a jolly soul and keeps you smiling.
- Make time for a personal image makeover. Try a new hair style, get a new business outfit in a flattering color, and get your teeth bleached. Your smile will light up your face with those pearly whites bright and WHITE.
