Hiring is Sizzling so Job Hunt is Now!
by Robin Ryan
The job market is the best it’s been in over five years. In the last six months, hiring has dramatically improved! Last year a job search was averaging over six months, now it’s taking about three to four.
I've been tracking a recent trend, one in which more employed people are looking around and moving on to a better job rather quickly. This is great news, especially for those who HAD to accept something less than ideal a few years back when so few jobs were available. The aftermath of 9/11 negatively impacted our economy and as a result for the last several years there have been very few really good hiring opportunities. So, if you have been contemplating a change; if you have a job but are unappreciated or aren't quite satisfied; or if you are employed but know you are underpaid in your current position, this is the time to initiate a new job search. I'm feeling very optimistic about marketplace opportunities right now, and I suggest you start job hunting today.
Here are some tips if you are contemplating a move:
-
Know what you want and how to get it. Employers are being flooded with unqualified people applying for everything under the sun. To stand out, look for good fit opportunities that use your greatest strengths. Learn how to effectively job hunt. For good online job listing sites, go to www.RobinRyan.com/tools where I’ve listed several high-quality sites.

Your resume needs to sizzle with accomplishments. A common mistake too many people make, is only listing their job description on the resume. Employers seek people with talent, potential, and a track record of results, so be sure your resume is reflective of your accomplishments. The formula I use in all the resumes I create for career counseling clients is making ACTIONS=RESULTS statements. I always include a strong summary of qualifications, which has four to six sentences encapsulating the applicant’s top selling points. This helps establish Brand You (AKA your career identity) concisely and quickly for the most effective impact..
-
Dress for success at work and in interviews -- PEOPLE DO NOTICE. Many employers complain about how job applicants often present themselves poorly. Your brand image can make or break the interview before you even say a word. Be stylish, conservative, well-groomed, and DRESS UP!
-
Research current salaries and recognize your market value. Don’t guess! Know what your talents are worth. You'll likely find you can command a higher salary somewhere else if you are a savvy negotiator. And, never ever mention money before the employer does. I’ve made it easy to learn what salary you can command. Use the salary calculator tools on http://www.robinryan.com/careerResources.htm

My advice for today -- the grass is pretty green on the other side of the fence ... so if you’re ready to move on, now is the time to check out your options!
